Real-world arrest for man who stole RuneScape virtual characters
November 30, 2009A man who hacked into accounts to steal virtual characters and their possessions on one of the world’s biggest multi-player online game has been arrested.
In what experts believe is the first case of its kind in Britain, the man obtained log-in details for RuneScape, a web-based role playing game with more than ten million members, to steal their “virtual” characters.
Players in the game have often spent years creating their online characters by completing set tasks and activities.
Police believe that password details were obtained through a so-called phishing scam where a fake internet page tricks people into handing over their personal information.
Officers from Central Police e-Crime Unit arrested the man last Tuesday on suspicion of a number of computer misuse offences. The man, from the Avon and Somerset area and who has not been named, accepted a police caution.
Games industry analysts and experts said that the case was unprecedented in this country and represented a legal grey area.
Complaints about people’s identities and possessions being stolen within a game have been made before, but because it exists only in a virtual world it is hard to say whether they are of any real value in the real world.
But a lucrative market has emerged by those who want to buy powerful characters and items within RuneScape and other popular games, such as World of Warcraft.
The resale of characters and their possessions is often against the rules set down by the makers of the games, but there are no criminal laws banning it.
“A bag of gold, a hammer or a sword within a game can be worth thousands of pounds,” said Rob Fahey, games analyst and former editor of gamesindustry.biz. “It’s bizarre, but that’s the 21st century for you.”
The financial rewards on offer have created an underground industry — dubbed gold farming — where players play in slave-like conditions to obtain the items and sell them on.
In China, where the sale of virtual goods for real money has now been banned, two men from Chengdu were arrested last year for the practice. Local media reported that the pair had made around £150,000 in six months through gold farming within World of Warcraft, employing 20 people in the process.
“Our first and only concern is protecting our player community as we know the high value players place on their unique accounts,” said Mark Gerhard, chief executive of Jagex Games, the Cambridge-based company that launched RuneScape in 2001.
“Players invest years of time and effort into developing their RuneScape character so the theft of a RuneScape account shouldn’t be treated differently to the theft of any other valuable possessions such as a games console, television or car.”
Mr Gerhard said that the company took a zero tolerance approach to hackers and worked with police in Britain and the FBI in America to combat cyber crime internationally. He said that 95 per of the hacking crimes within RuneScape were down to a handful of individuals.
Similar incidents have occurred around the world. Last year, a court in the Netherlands convicted 14 and 15 year old boys after they assaulted another RuneScape player, threatening him with knife and forcing him to hand over an amulet and a mask within the game. The court set a precedent in that country by saying: “these virtual goods are goods (under Dutch law), so this is theft”.
In South Korea, computer games tournaments are a national obsession with matches taking place in stadiums, and televised nationally. Police in the country report that they receive tens of thousands of complaints on “cyber crimes” a year that have something to do with online gaming.
In Britain, the Police Central e-Crime Unit was set up in September 2008 to target serious and organised online crime. A spokesman for the unit said: “People who seek to destroy others online gaming experience could be committing criminal offences, leaving themselves liable to prosecution. The PCeU will continue to work with the industry and investigate these allegations where appropriate.”

RuneScape Quest Guide - How To Through Demon Slayer

Requirements: Able to defeat an apocalyptic demon (Lvl 27, weakened with Silverlight Sword aquired during the quest)
Items Needed: 25 regular bones, 1 coin.
Quest Points Reward: 3
Reward: You can keep Silverlight, which is useful for weakening any kind of demon.
Start Point: Varrock Square
To Start: The Gypsy in her tent on Varrock square
1.Speak with Gypsy Aris. She will tell you about an ancient demon, Delrith, who was defeated long ago, by a a hero named Wally, who wielded the Silverlight sword. She tells you that the demon is returning, and is going to attempt to destroy Varrock. She prophesies that you are the one that can defeat the demon, and save the city.
She also tells you the incantation that Wally used to defeat the demon. Make sure to write this down, as the incantation is different for each person.
Note: This will not be your incantation. This is an example of one.
2.To get Silverlight, The Gypsy tells you to go and speak with Sir Prysin, in Varrock Castle.
3.Sir Prysin is on the first floor of the castle, near the entrance. Speak with him.
4.He will tell you that his grandfather was Wally, and the Sir Prysin has the sword in his possesion. However, there are three keys needed to unlock the case in which the sword is held. One key is with Captain Rovin, one with Wizard Traiborn, and another, Sir Prysin accidently dropped down the drain.
5.Walk to the northwest end of the castle, and climb to the third floor, Rovin’s Chamber. Speak with Rovin about the key. After a conversation, he will agree to give the key to you.
6.Go back to the first floor, and head to the northeast side of the building. Climb up the stairs, and pick up a bucket.
7.Go back down stairs, and fill the bucket up with water, at the sink. Then, go outside, and use the bucket of water with the drain. The key will fall down into the sewers.
8.Walk out of the east castle walls, and climb down into the manhole (if the manhole is closed, simply open the lid).
Walk towards the back, and pick up the key from the ground.
9.Take your 25 bones, and head to the Wizards Tower, south of Draynor Village. Take them to the second floor, and speak with Traiborn. He will request 25 bones to preform a ritual so that he can get the key from his safekeeping.

Firstly, mine lots of tin and copper ores until you have enough to make at least 200 bronze bars. This will not take all that long and remember to keep upgrading your pickaxes everytime you can as they will save a lot of time. Smelt all the bars at once at al kharid and then head to varrock where you should turn them into whatever you can. Sell at the grand exchange or general stores.
Continue in this trend with iron ores and eventually steel. However, in my case, I mined and smith iron until my smithing level was 46, at which point I started making steel bars. Do Not Smith Your Steel Bars Until You Have Level 48 Smithing! This is very important! Just keep banking the bars and when you finally arrive at level 48 smithing, the money will start rolling in!

How to Get Some Runescape Tips: Make Money With Mining
November 20, 2009Mining is very important, as ore pretty much fuels the game. If there was no mining, then there would be a much less diverse variety of weapons and armour available, making the game pretty dull.
That’s why it’s important to get your mining skill up.
From level 1-20 you should mine copper from the south varrock mine
From level 20-40 you should mine iron from the mine near rimmington or varrock
When you reach level 40, it should be much easier to mine coal. You can mine coal at level 30, but it will take much longer, besides, if you level up with the other ores, you can either make money by selling them or you can keep them and maybe use them later (I recommend this method, it’s more profitable).
I also recommed that you buy and adamantite (Or adamantine I always forget how you spell that) or rune pick axe.
A good place for paid runescape members to mine coal, is at the mine near ardougne, which also has a bank fairly close by, this will speed up your mining and make you more efficient.
If you’re a free runescape member, you can mine coal in the dwarven mines, however there isn’t a bank nearby, so you wont be very efficient.
Now, mine coal until you’re level 60
Since you’re level 60 you can go to to mining guild to mine coal until you’re level 85
And now that you’re mining level 85, you should go and mine rune in the wilderness or from the heroes guild (Much safer). Rune seller for between 10,000-15,000 per piece, so I think you’ll agree that it’s certainly worth the effort to do it.
When following the steps above, I strongly suggest that you keep all of the ore you get and smith it into something useful. Otherwise, feel free to sell it and see some immediate return for your efforts

All About Runescape Rare Items
November 17, 2009Yes it’s sad but true. Personally I don’t know why Jagex did this, but I’m sure they have their reasons.
I suppose the holiday drops and rare items show how long that someone has been playing, so you can show them off as an achievement. Or perhaps they don’t like the fact that some people (Smart people) will hoard loads of holiday drops for themselves, buying them from anyone else that has them, or starting bogus accounts and collecting holiday drops, then when the holiday drop event is over and it’s not longer possible to get them, the hoarder would charge a TON of money for each one. Since they’re no longer available, people will pay big money for them.
Personally I don’t think that it’s a horrible thing, but it does present people with an opportunity to collect large amounts of gold and sell it on eBay for example, that’s a bad thing as it’s against the rules and encourages people to use auto miners etc to gain gold.
Okay, now that we’ve established a bit of background information on the rare items in runescape, it’s time to get down to the specifics of a few of the more popular holiday drops.
The most commonly talked about runescape rare item is the party hat, sometimes called phats for short. They come is 6 different colours, red, yellow, blue, green, white and purple.
Pretty bad graphics by it’s one of the rare items in runescape and presumably it’s value will constantly increase.
Another rare item is the Santa hat. This was a Christmas holiday drop in 2002. Again, very rare and highly priced. Not sure about how much it costs compared with the party hats.
And finally, the last tradeable runescape rare item holiday drop that I’m going to talk about, is the Halloween masks. As far as I know there were only 3 colours and other than that, they looked exactly the same. It could have been picked up on Halloween 2002.
In 2003 and beyond, holiday drops were made to be no longer tradeable, and will never be tradeable for the forseeable future. A Day At Barrows - RuneScape Reflections
November 8, 2009I am Barrowing a lot to get my mage and range levels to 99 (currently range 96, mage 97, combat 91). Barrowing is great mage training as the loots from the chest often provide me with the necessary runes to cast Magic Dart of Slayer (slayer lvl 55 required). I have so far done well over 100 runs in the Barrows, and have acquired more than 3000 boltracks and blood runes and about 8k chaos runes. I don’t keep count of gp or mind runescape, but I am never out of stock of needed runes.
The most treasured loot I’ve gotten so far from The Barrows is:
* Torags Platebody
* 2 Guthans Helms (sold for 3.35 mill gp each =))
* Veracs Helm
* Veracs Brassard
* Veracs Plateskirt
* Karils Skirt.
Not to mention all the half keys - at least 4.
Most people pray Protection against melee attacks and thus don’t have to hide and run like I do, they just activate prayer and let their character autoattack with a magic spell they have set. So these players spend a lot of prayer potions to finish off the brothers in the crypts. When you enter one of the crypts (spade needed) your prayer will be drained by approximately 10+ every 10 seconds or so. Without the sip of a prayer pot Barrows would be impossible to do except for those very high levelled runescape accounts.
My way of barrowing is very risky but it saves me expenses on prayer potions. I have a moderately high combat lvl with 70 defense, but I only mage and range at Barrows as I have quit training melee altogether. Here is a simple description of how I do the Barrow runs.
I stock up with runes for entangle spells (79 magic required) and magic dart spells (55 slayer required). I don’t use pray on the melee brothers at all - I simply search their tomb and instantly entangle the brother that emerges. Then I run off a couple of squares and attack with magic dart. The tangle spell holds my foe to the spot for 15 seconds, enough time to cast 4 magic darts. Before the tangle spell breaks I run behind the tomb and waits 5 seconds before I repeat with a new entangle. After a hold spell has been cast and worn off, your enemy will be immune to any hold spells for 5 seconds! Therefore it is important to keep your distance from physical contact with the melee brothers if your prayer is off - their “embraces” aren’t exactly like the ones you get in momma’s arms =p
Finishing off the Melee brothers like I do is very risky. You must know how to hide behind the tombs the proper way. I use a technique that is similar to “side-stepping”, two of the corners of each tomb give this possibility. Side stepping is used by high levels that fight close up with the brothers - when they need to eat and regroup they have positioned themselves at a corner of the chest such that when they just move a step off from their foe which will be stuck on the corner of the tomb.
I keep getting questions and comments on why I don’t use Melee Prayer like everyone else. My initial thought was to save on prayer pots so I started using ancient magick. Again without praying melee. With my high magic level I can use Ice barrage - it holds the enemy for 20 seconds and deals massive damage. Ancient Magick turns out to be is very expensive, so I would start with an Ice Barrage and then continue my attacks with Ice Bursts. I made profit anyway (guess I was lucky with my lootings) - but I’d rather use my blood runes for some proper pk’ing.
After some experiments and testing I decided to continue with Modern Magic instead, and haven’t regretted since. The risk has increased, but it only makes it more entertaning. If I should die and loose my Ahrims mage outfit or Guthan helm - well I hope the finder will be happy =p.
So far I have been lucky - yesterday I got Veracs Plateskirt! Now I only need Veracs Flail for a full Verac set.
Aaaa - the satisfaction of picking up free stuff! This happened on the same day as I got Veracs Skirt!
I was in Dharoks tomb preparing to take him down - as always with butterflies in my stomach - killing Dharok without melee prayer on is VERY DANGEROUS (that guy can deal at least 58 damage in one hit when his health bar is close to zero).
Suddenly I see a player getting massive blows to his character, it happens so quick that he has no chance to escape. And voila! On the ground is the remains of this poor player - and what riches he dropped! I picked up: Obsidian Shield, Black mystic top and bottom, 200+ rune arrows, Berserker helm, black ranger set and so on. My inventory was full of lobs and I unfortunately had to see some of the things this poor player dropped being picked up by others as I couldn’t gobble up them lobbies fast enough.
With a newly “looted” obby shield and a fresh Verac Plateskirt in inventory I decided to teleport to closest bank and have a break from the game. No need to test my luck further =P

It works like this. Two players who know each other are in the same place. Player 1 shouts “TRADING DRAGON LONG FOR 100 Swordfish”. So now the other members try to get 100 Swordfish, and here is where Player 2 comes into the game. Player 2 advertises “SELLING 100 SWORDFISH, 80k.”, which is totally over priced, but since the Members want that Dragon Long they buy the Swordfish and then go to Player1 and offer to Trade. Player 1 will reply with “Never mind”. The person who bought the Swordfish got ripped off for about 50k!!!
I’ve seen this happen myself. I didn’t of course fall for this trick, but I watched silently. The player then who bought the Swordfish was really mad. He was shouting around like a Wild man, so please do not fall for this cheap trick.
Just be careful. Runescape is full of people who try to cheat. Stay away from them and everything will be alright.

November 3, 2009RuneScape is a new game largely intended for children that is fast becoming popular with the kids and could be a potential competitor to the World of Warcraft, now supposedly the most popular in this category of Internet games. RuneScape is easy to access since it is supposed to be primarily for children. There are more advanced section however where some payment is needed, and this is where the kids call on the dads for help… The only disadvantage of this free game is that a banner ad is always at the top of the page. This could be annoying to adults, but for a kid he does not mind this. As long as he is seated before the computer and engrossed in the fighting he does, what kid really bothers about banner ads?
