Weatherstripping in preparation for the winter will save you $$ in the cold season. Knowing how to conserve energy can help lower your energy bills and balance your household budget. Weatherstripping is applied at joints where two surfaces meet and move relative to each other, such as windows and doors. Properly installed weatherstripping provides an air-tight seal around doors and windows. Tests show that tubular weatherstripping provides the best seal. However, if doors and windows will be used by children, handicapped or elderly, use silicone, neoprene, urethane or rubber strips-they require less pressure when closing doors and windows.

1. Hold a feather or a burning incense stick in front of a window. You’ll have most decisive results if you do this check on a cool, windy fall day, or a very cold winter day. Have all exhaust fans, the furnace and clothes dryer running while you perform this check. If the feather or smoke moves away from the window, you have a leak and should weatherize. 2. Use quality weather-stripping. Poor quality materials won’t last long at heavy traffic doors.
3. Self Stick Foam only requires a knife or shears and a tape measure. It is extremely easy to install and invisible when installed, but not very durable. To install, stick foam to inside face of jamb.
4. Rolled Vinyl with Aluminum channel backing requires a hammer, nails, metal snips and a tape measure. It is easy to install, visible when installed, and durable.
5. Foam Rubber with Wood Backing requires a hammer, nails, hand saw, and tape measure. It is easy to install, visible when installed, but not very durable. Installation is simple-you nail the Weather strip snugly against the closed door, spacing nails 8 to 12 inches apart.
6. Spring Metal requires sheet metal snips, hammer, nails, and a tape measure. It is not difficult to install. It is invisible when installed and extremely durable. To install, simply cut to length and tack in place. Then lift outer edge of strip with screwdriver after tacking for a tighter seal. Note: This is harder than the preceeding choices, as door frame tolerances vary.
7. Interlocking metal channels require a hack saw, hammer, nails and tape measure. It is difficult to install because alignment is critical. Visible when installed, metal channels are durable but subject to damage because they’re exposed. They do offer an excellent seal. You cut and fit Weather strip to head of door first: male strip on door, female on head; then hinge side of door: male strip on jamb, female on door; finally lock side on door, female on jamb.

You can use weatherstripping in your home to seal air leaks around movable joints, such as windows or doors.

To determine how much weatherstripping you will need, add the perimeters of all windows and doors to be weatherstripped, then add 5%–10% to accommodate any waste. Also consider that weatherstripping comes in varying depths and widths.

Before applying weatherstripping in an existing home, you need to do the following (if you haven’t already):

Detect air leaks
Assess your ventilation needs for indoor air quality.
Selection
Choose a type of weatherstripping that will withstand the friction, weather, temperature changes, and wear and tear associated with its location. For example, when applied to a door bottom or threshold, weatherstripping could drag on carpet or erode as a result of foot traffic. Weatherstripping in a window sash must accommodate the sliding of panes—up and down, sideways, or out. The weatherstripping you choose should seal well when the door or window is closed while allowing it to open freely.

Choose a product for each specific location. Felt and open-cell foams tend to be inexpensive, susceptible to weather, visible, and inefficient at blocking airflow. However, the ease of applying these materials may make them valuable in low-traffic areas. Vinyl, which is slightly more expensive, holds up well and resists moisture. Metals (bronze, copper, stainless steel, and aluminum) last for years and are affordable. Metal weatherstripping can also provide a nice touch to older homes where vinyl might seem out of place.

You can use more than one type of weatherstripping to seal an irregularly shaped space. Also take durability into account when comparing costs. See Table 1 below for information about the common types of weatherstripping.

Application
Weatherstripping supplies and techniques range from simple to the technical. Consult the instructions on the weatherstripping package. Here are a few basic guidelines:

Weatherstripping should be applied to clean, dry surfaces in temperatures above 20°F (-7° C).
Measure the area to be weatherstripped twice before you cut anything.
Apply weatherstripping snugly against both surfaces. The material should compress when the window or door is shut.
When weatherstripping doors:

Choose the appropriate door sweeps and thresholds for the bottom of the doors.
Weatherstrip the entire door jamb.
Apply one continuous strip along each side.
Make sure the weatherstripping meets tightly at the corners.
Use a thickness that causes the weatherstripping to tightly press between the door and the door jamb when the door closes, without making it difficult to shut.
For air sealing windows, apply Weather strip between the sash and the frame. The Weather strip shouldn’t interfere with the operation of the window.

I’m replacing the Weather strip on the drivers door of my four door 1979 Chevy Caprice. I bought the really nice stuff from JC Whitney that is supposed to fit perfectly in the car. I’ve already glued the top around the window channel and that went fine. However, the pegs are too big for the holes along the bottom and sides of the door. I’ve tried pushing, I’ve tried a hammer, they are just too large.

1979-93 Mustang Outer Door Handle & Inner Door Belt Weatherstripping Install

I currently have an 87 coupe in the middle of a 351 swap, so while its down and waiting on a few parts to come in I decided it’s finally time to replace the door handles ( 1979-93 Mustang outer door handle kit - part# LRS-22404K) and the 1981-93 Mustang inner door belt Weather strip pair (part# LRS-21456PR). These are two parts that are easily overlooked and often put off, but make a difference when they are replaced.

I opted for the black door handle kit for $19.99, but you may prefer the kit in chrome for $24.99 (1979-93 Mustang Chrome Outer Door Handle Kit w/ Rivets) installation is the same either way.

This is the stock handle unfortunately painted to match the body color. I recommend taping around the door handle before drilling out the old rivets or installing the new ones to protect the paint if the rivet gun or the drill decides to move.

On the stock door panels, you will have two bolts under the armrest pad that are covered by two round plugs and a philips head screw farther up the pull handle that holds the armrest assembly on. Once these are removed, the assembly has two T-shaped tabs holding it in-just pull up and forward and they slide right out. There is a screw on the door handle bezel, one in the speaker grille, and one in the mirror hole cover that have to be removed as well. If your car has manual windows, the plastic cover on the window crank slides to the side and a torx bit holds the handle on.

Once these are removed the door panel is held on by the clips in the back of it. It is easy to slide your hand behind the edges of the panel and gently pull the panel away from the door one clip at a time, but if your door panel is not in very good condition you may want to invest in one of our Mustang door panel removal/installation kits.

The top of the panel lips over the door frame at the base of window, so you have to lift the panel off the door once the clips are out.

Then drill out the rivets and disconnect the rod from the door handle on the inside.

Once the door panels are off, it’s a good time to replace the inner door belt weatherstrip, as it only takes a few minutes. We just pulled the factory staples out and used the LRS-21456HDW inner door belt screws to attach the new ones. It’s as simple as pulling staples and screwing the new ones in.

Line the new handles up and make sure the rod inside the door is going through the rod retainer on the door handle and rivet the new handles on. The door handle rivets are quite large so if you don’t already have one you will need to purchase or borrow a large rivet gun. We sell one that is designed to work with this kit (rivet gun for 1979-93 Mustang outer door handles) or you might be able to find one at your local hardware store. 

It only took a little over an hour to do both sides and was well worth it. For cars Weatherstripping equipped with power windows and locks, there will be a few more things to unhook when pulling the door panels off but should be pretty close.
